Shiras Moose

The Shiras Moose (Alces alces shirasi), a distinctive subspecies of the moose family, is primarily found in the forests and wetlands of the northern Rocky Mountains, notably in areas such as Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. This majestic animal is characterized by its relatively smaller size compared to other moose, with adult males typically weighing between 800 to 1,200 pounds and standing about 5 to 6.5 feet at the shoulder. Key features include long, palmate antlers that can span over 60 inches, and a broad muzzle, which aids in foraging for aquatic vegetation and hardwood browse. Hunting Shiras Moose presents a unique challenge, as their elusive nature and preference for dense cover require hunters to navigate rugged terrain and utilize effective calling techniques during the autumn rut. Successful hunts often hinge on strategic scouting and a deep understanding of their behavior, as well as adherence to local regulations and ethical practices, ensuring a respectful approach to this iconic North American species.

Weighing up to 1000 pounds, the Shiras Moose is one of North America's largest game animals. Preferring to hide in clearcuts and areas of regeneration, this impressive animal has massive antlers and is the ultimate game animal. You'll be staying at one of our hunting lodges, enjoying first-class accommodations and homecooked meals. You are free to hunt with a rifle or a bow, the choice is yours. If you have a wolf tag, you'll be able to hunt for wolves on this hunt as well. We have never sent a hunter home without a moose. While this is not a guarantee, it is a testament to how many successful guided moose hunts we have hosted here at Shattuck Creek. Moose tags are drawn in a lottery system, and you must draw a tag from Idaho Fish & Game before hunting with us. Visit the Idaho Fish & Game link below to see draw results and application instructions.

A drop camp is where we pack you and/or your gear on horseback to a designated camp spot. We then leave you for a specific amount of time and then come back for you. You may either ride or you may hike into your camp site. Our Outfitted Drop Camps are pre-set tent camps that include tent, wood stoves, an axe and saw for you to cut firewood that is readily available, cooking & eating utensils, cots & foam sleeping pads, propane lanterns (you provide the propane), propane cook tops (you provide the propane), cooking & dining tables and latrine facilities. Some parts of our area are very remote, and we suggest you bring a Satellite phone for communication for those areas. It is your responsibility to get all game into your camp and we will pack it out to your vehicles from there. Our Outfitted Drop Camp fees DO NOT include food, propane, guides, personal gear (including rifle & sleeping bag), horses left in camp, hunting license and tag fees, field preparation of game, meat processing & taxidermy fees or shipping. Outfitted Drop Camps have a 4-person minimum. The pack horse weight limit is approximately 160lbs. Please look at our pricing page for current drop camp pricing.

Double T Outfitters offers quality elk, mule deer, antelope, moose, black bear and antelope hunts. We offer archery hunts, bugle hunts in heavy rut with a rifle and migration hunts. We enjoy some of Wyoming's most game rich country, years of experience and the best guides in the area. We're a serious, hard working, alcohol free camp. So long as the hunter is willing, we hunt in any kind of weather. Some mornings start for the guides as early as 2:30 a.m. and will find us in the saddle hours before daylight just to catch a big bull in one of our favorite meadows or a large muley on a high peak drifting back to his bedding grounds. We take the load off our hunters in every way possible so they can focus all their energy on hunting. We believe we can offer you some of the finest guides, horses, food, camp and hunting that the outfitting industry has to offer.
