Our lodge hunts start the last week of October and run until the Sunday after Thanksgiving. This is the general season for Montana elk hunting. These hunts are less strenuous than the backcountry. The lodge is situated right above Deckard Flats, which is the main migratory route for the northern Yellowstone elk herd. We are surrounded by National Forest and just a 1/2 mile from the Yellowstone boundary. We hunt migrating elk as well as a healthy native herd. These guided hunts are 5 days in length.
We take about 130 hunters a year. Our clients come back year after year and tell their friends about us. All of my hunters from my first few years in business are still hunting with us.
We have taken several corporate clients, who use the elk hunt as an opportunity to reward employees or forge bonds with clients. This is the ideal for enjoying yourself and improving your business relationships! If you have the time, please take a look at the quality elk that our clients take from their expeditions with Hell’s A-Roarin’ Outfitters!

These are among the most rugged Montana elk hunts, and we often describe them as “extreme” hunts. Our hunts are guided in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and Swan Valley areas of Montana off of horseback. Our guides and horses have been preparing and getting shape all summer long on backcountry pack trips; elk season is what they’ve been waiting for!
We offer combination hunts in which you can target mule deer, whitetail, and bear as well. Some of our hunters have snagged a wolf tag too! Many of our elk hunters bring both their rifle and bow. Multi-weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity.
We like to get deep into the back country and utilize spike camps. This can get us in closer proximity to the elk for opening day. This spike camp strategy has produced many harvested elk in seasons past, but does lack the comforts of traditional hunting camps. Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. This terrain is more challenging to hunt elk in, no doubt, no flat land here. We utilize our horses to search the front range of the Bob Marshall for elk. With exclusive access in the areas where we hunt, Swan Mountain Outfitters is able to offer archery elk hunters perhaps one of the most unique and best opportunities to bag an elk of a lifetime with a bow. As the season progresses, migration of elk begins and affords our late season elk hunters an opportunity to bag an elk at lower altitudes.

Montana black bear are fair game in both the fall and spring! Color phase bears in shades of cinnamon, chocolate, and blonde are seen more frequently than jet black bears. In fact, the Swan Valley is home to some of the best black bear hunting in Montana. Our bear hunts often utilize horses, which makes us a very unique option for guided bear hunts in Montana. Montana bear hunting in our area is pure fair chase, no baiting or use of dogs, in fact we can’t even use scents.
The Swan Valley is one of the few areas in Montana that remains open for black bear hunting until June 15th. In the spring these animals are very active. They consolidate in numbers on the valley floor taking advantage of the new growth to bulk up after hibernation. Using a combination of horses and hiking, we’ll hunt rockslides, search old logging roads and mountain meadows for scat and sit clear cuts. Hunters can elect to take some time to fish, taking advantage of our “Cast & Blast” offering where you can have an opportunity to shoot a black bear, catch a lake trout and a northern pike all on the same adventure.

Archery hunting elk, requiring close proximity to the animal, is, by its very nature, quite different from hunting these animals using a rifle. Successful archery hunts require excellent calling abilities and guides who know the difference between techniques utilized for archery versus rifle hunts. Archery hunts necessitate minimizing overexposure of hunting areas and minimizing scent control and noise. For these reasons, we only take two hunters to each of our “archery only” designated areas.
We have experimented with various styles of guided archery elk hunts and we believe we have landed upon an offering that delivers the ultimate archery elk hunting experience in Montana. Even though the season is actually longer, we focus solely on the time frame surrounding the rut to maximize our opportunity: we offer three sessions of 7-day archery only hunts. Note that this boils down to 5 days of solid hunting as the rest of the time is spent getting to and from the area. We employ two-on-one guiding as we have found it is the best way to maximize our hunters' opportunities to be successful.
With limited space, our archery elk hunts are the first to book up. We typically have been booked two years in advance, so don’t wait! Our elk herds are in better shape today than they have been in thirty years! Our hunting areas also support ample populations of whitetail and mule deer and color phase black bear, increasing the chances of success across species. There are lots of places to hunt Merriam’s but few can compare to the scenic beauty of river breaks country in Eastern Montana. We can say with confidence that you will have the best Merriam’s guides in Montana. Our crew cut their teeth on educated Easterns and know these birds inside and out. You won’t find a more dedicated crew who will work tirelessly to make sure you have the best hunt possible.
We have a strong population of un-pressured, mature birds and it’s not uncommon to watch a big Tom work in from quite a ways off. We strictly manage our hunt area to maintain an abundant population of older age class birds so it doesn't matter if you’re the first group in camp or the last, you are going to have an amazing hunt with lots of mature birds to chase around each day. In addition to world class Turkey hunting, we also offer the opportunity to fish and hunt prairie dogs while you are staying with us.
This is a fantastic way to kill time in the afternoon or stay entertained while your partner finishes up his/her hunt. We strive to have a fun camp atmosphere that will make you feel welcome from the moment you pull up till we say our goodbyes.

We have a remote backcountry camp in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness in Montana, adjacent to the northern boundary of Yellowstone National Park. Our backcountry elk hunts start during the bugle season, September 15 and run through to October 15. This is an early rifle season and the hunts are 7 days long. The horseback ride to camp from my lodge is 22 miles.
Our camp is very comfortable, with wall tents, stoves, cots, foam pads and lanterns. We always have an excellent and congenial cook in camp, with plentiful, home style meals. Our string of horses and mules are the best in the business and gentle for anyone to ride.
I personally guide, and my crew of hunting guides is the best to be found. We all work as a team, and do not feel satisfied until every hunter in camp fills out. Your success of hunting and killing an elk is our main goal!

Montana is known for producing high numbers of color phase black bears; on average, over 60% of our bears are either brown, cinnamon, or blonde. We only hunt using spot and stalk tactics. A spring bear hunt can be one of the most enjoyable and beautiful times of the year to hunt in Montana. The weather is nice, the mountains are vibrant with spring colors, and there are usually lots of other animals to see during your hunt: Deer, Elk, Moose, etc.
We take a limited number of hunters each year to maximize the quality and success of our hunts. We spend the day glassing from vantage points in order to locate a bear that is in a good position for a stalk. Weather can play a big factor in day-to-day movement, but our hunters typically see multiple bears during their hunt. A spot and stalk hunt in the mountains of Montana can be physically demanding, similar to an elk hunt. If you arrive in good shape, you will have a much better chance of being successful.
Our hunt area is very open country, and we can see for great distances. This helps us spot bears but makes for some longer shot opportunities. To give yourself the best chance of being successful, you should be comfortable shooting out to 300 yards.

This is a unique hunt on private land where hunts are conducted out of 4x4 trucks, making it feasible for elderly folks or difficulty walking.
We have been operating out of our Candy Dan Camp for over 25 years. Constructed on the private ranch we hunt, located some 65 miles south of Great Falls, our base camp consists of a newly constructed cook house built in 2013, equipped with a full kitchen, buffet table, couches, hot and cold water, and a custom dining table for up to 12 hunters, three cabins for sleeping quarters for the hunters, a sauna house, and sleeping quarters for the guides. Camp is equipped with propane heat, electricity in all cabins, electricity, full shower/sauna, and WIFI!
DL Elk Outfitters conducts guided rifle elk hunts on over 70,000 Private acres in the Big Belt Mountains in central Montana. These private lands are home to some of Montana’s largest resident elk herds. We are not dependent on migrations, or heavy snows to push the elk out of areas we cannot hunt, giving our hunters a high chance of success. The country is rich in large grass meadows for feed to ridges and draws of timber making excellent habitat. Elk hunters access the hunting areas by 4-wheel drive vehicles and hiking to vantage spots and glassing for bull elk. (No horses or pack strings here.)
Only bull elk with brow tines are legal in our area to harvest and that means 5, 6, and 7 point bulls are the norm here rather than exception. Elk hunters average glassing more than 100 elk per week on our hunts. Mule Deer and Whitetail Deer are available on all elk hunts and make for a great combo. Our hunting leases, comfortable cabins, elevations under 6500 feet and 4-wheel drive access make this an area any hunter regardless of age or physical condition can hunt. Our rifle elk hunts are all guided 2 hunters per guide unless prior arrangements are made. Elk and deer licenses are on a draw basis and have to be applied for to the state of Montana, by March 15. Draw rates in recent years have been 100%.

Montana has some great areas for hunting big Toms and is one of few states to allow hunting mountain lion (a.k.a. cougar, puma). We utilize experienced hounds men and dogs to “tree” cats. Since these hunts begin in December, you’ll be treated to very comfortable accommodations with meals provided. See Lodge details here. This is a unique experience and we have great trophy cats.
Hunting mountain lions is totally different than hunting for elk, deer or bear. Your day begins as early as 1:00 am, you’ll have a light breakfast and join our houndsman who will instruct you on how to “cut” a track. Tracking a mountain lion involves driving or snowmobiling through a myriad of US Forest Service and private timber company roads, using spotlights mounted to the cat truck, and trying to eyeball a track from many yards away. Once a track is found, dogs are put on it to see if it carries a scent. If so, they’re off and the race is on!
It can take several hours for the dogs to find and tree the cat. Once the cat is treed, the hunter’s work begins – they must find the dogs and the treed cat in time before it escapes. If we haven’t treed a cat by 4:00 pm, we typically quit for the day as we don’t want to hunt in the dark. At this point, hunters have the remainder of the afternoon to relax, tour around the area or rest up. The duration of your Montana mountain lion hunt is typically 5 days. However, we can extend a hunt up to 10 days using daily rates if we haven’t got a hunter his or her cat.
While there are never guarantees in hunting, the success rate for our Montana mountain lion hunts has been nearly 100% in the past. The skill of our dogs, the quality of the area we have rights to hunt in, and the quality and skill of the houndsmen we employ all play a role in our success rates at Swan Mountain Outfitters. Since mountain lion hunts in Montana take place during the winter months, hunters have access to a variety of exciting winter activities that can be added on to the front or back end of their hunt. These activities include but are not limited to: downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and ice skating.

Our antelope hunts are conducted in the month of October on our private leases. The antelope herds are healthy and growing. Trophy bucks in our area average 13-14″ with 15″ a possibility. Antelope hunts are done in the traditional spot and stalk. This hunt is great for kids and families as there is usually lots of action, spotting, stalking, shooting.
Come and enjoy a great hunt, view mule deer, whitetail, and elk. Antelope can also be added to our elk hunts we offer in November. Antelope licenses in the state of Montana are on a draw basis; the deadline to apply is June 1.

Pronghorn are a symbol of the west and numbers are back on the rise here in Montana. We have a vast amount of land at our disposal and you are assured to have a fun and enjoyable hunt. Our guests have had a 100% shot opportunity last four seasons. With mild weather and great odds of success, this just might be the most fun hunt we offer!
Our hunt area boasts a robust population with strong trophy potential. For this reason our region 700 tags are highly sought after by hunters across the country. Hunters have pulled tags in the first year applying but generally you should expect to draw in your second or third year applying. This is a fantastic hunt to introduce new hunters to the sport or get a taste of the Western hunting experience.

Our hunt area boasts a robust population with strong trophy potential. For this reason, our region 700 tags are highly sought after by hunters across the country. Hunters have pulled tags in the first year applying but generally you should expect to draw in your second or third year applying. This is a fantastic hunt to introduce new hunters to the sport or get a taste of the Western hunting experience.

Our antelope hunts are conducted in the month of October on our private leases. The antelope herds are healthy and growing. Trophy bucks in our area average 13-14″ with 15″ a possibility. We invite you to hunt with us on our well managed elk ranch that totals around 10,000 acres. Our properties are nestled into the foothills of the crazy mountains which are located in central Montana. Our goal is to limit the number of hunters we take which decreases pressure and increases success. Hunt tactics include a mixture of ground blinds, calling, and spot and stalk hunting.
While it is possible to access the property by vehicle, we try to minimize disturbance by utilizing horses and hiking when possible. Trophy potential varies depending on a number of factors including time of year, temperature, weather patterns etc. but most hunters have a chance at 5x5 and 6x6 bulls. We would classify this ranch as having moderate terrain as far as elk country is concerned. This means that you don’t have to climb thousands of feet every day to reach the elk. However, it is still elk country and the ranch is over 6000’ in elevation.
It is for this reason that we ask all hunters to make sure they show up in good physical condition. You will have more fun and your odds of success only increase by being in good shape. Hunt includes food, lodging and travel to and from the hunt area. Guests stay in a renovated, fully furnished four bedroom house in the town of White Sulphur Springs. We will provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In addition to cooking at the house there are great local eating options as well.

Multi weapon hunts are popular with elk hunters that like to maximize their opportunity.

Experience a hunt like no other. Here at DL Elk Outfitters, we have been guiding elk hunters for over 25 years on our private leases in central Montana in the Big Belt Mountains. Every year we offer a limited number of guided archery elk hunts in the peak of the rut in September. Our resident elk herds are large and we grow some of the best bulls in the state of Montana. We have exclusive private leases to guide on, we don’t compete with no other hunters or have any wolves to deal with.
Our bulls usually are very vocal and respond well to calling. Archers can expect to see and be up close to bull elk on a daily basis. Most of our archery hunts are conducted by locating elk then stalking and calling bulls to within bow range. Archery elk hunters are treated to delicious home cooked meals, comfortable cabins, a sauna house, electricity and WIFI! Our Montana guided archery elk hunts are 5 1/2 days in length with two hunters per guide ratio and a maximum of 4 hunters a week, giving all hunters lots of area to hunt.

Our spring bear hunts are just about 100%. Bears are plentiful and very trophy worthy. 70% of our bears are brown, cinnamon or blonde, and the other 30% are black. An average bear is 6 feet, and our largest we have taken is 7’2″.
We hunt one on one, on horseback and hiking. We do not use hounds or bait. Prerequisites for bear hunting include a bear I.D. test from the Fish and Game, and a bear tag before April 15th. We hunt from April 15th to June 15th.
